Capitol Weekly
The following stories were first published in the Capitol Morning Report on December 2, 2010. The kind folks at Capitol Morning Report have allowed us to re-post their coverage of the California Gridiron Gala. Thanks CMR.
Capitol Morning Report
Editor's Note: Morning Report regulars Bob Schmidt and Laura-Lynne Powell were mightily impressed by the Sacramento Press Club's Gridiron Gala last night. Following are their separate accounts, the difference being largely that Laura-Lynne said beforehand that she'd do color.
By Bob Schmidt Wednesday night's first Sacramento Press Club Gridiron Gala was a spectacular success, and nearly 600 people were entertained in the Sacramento Convention Center by a high quality two-and-a-half hour production featuring Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. *** By Laura-Lynne Powell First, the over-all theme I want to get across is that this thing was a huge hit. This event will probably be the buzz of the Capitol tomorrow. The crowd seemed so proud that Sacramento pulled off such a production. It wasn't that show was so spectacular, it actually was cute and folksy (in my opinion) in that everyone knew folks on the stage. It was like watching a high school play where your friends are up there. (In skits were George Skelton, Dan Walters, HD Palmer, Kevin Riggs, Mike Villines, Jim Brulte and Darrell Steinberg who blew the crowd away by singing "I did it my way" with a twist of words - one line he said "for the last time, let's do it my way." Another line: "I faced it all and grew some balls and did it, my way." He laughed out loud while he sang. He was a great sport. He wore a fedora, purple shirt and pinstriped suit jacket.) During the skits the microphone kept buzzing in and out but no one cared. It was all fun. The crowd seemed to especially enjoy the large congenial gathering, everyone dressed up, enjoying cocktails, and talking talking talking (at least before the show). The big deal was that all of the Capitol community was there. This wasn't an event for Republicans or Democrats, or union or business, or good guys or bad guys. It wasn't to benefit one side or another. It was by and for the Capitol community to benefit a non profit cause. Arnold later joked that the event brought together so many people from so many different groups that there was "more reaching out going on here today than probably happened on the third date Maria and I had" I think there was a lot of pride in that Sacramento pulled off a real gridiron event that rivaled (some said surpassed) Washington DC's fabled annual show. Both Maria Shriver and Arnold Schwarzenegger said to the crowd when they were on stage in separate speeches that they had gone to the Washington gridiron "last year" and the Sacramento one was better. Press Club Pres. Rich Ehisen said they sold 530 tickets, 230 more than they had originally aimed for. Another thing that made people feel good was that Maria and Arnold's speeches were really very sweet goodbyes to Sacramento. Both of them said very nice things about the people who've helped them in Sacramento and about the press that witnessed their seven years here. Arnold said this is his eighth and last talk before the press club as governor. He used his speech to "roast" a few of the people in Sacto and these were very funny lines. Arnold joked: that George Skelton's skit as a newspaper reporter was "cute" and that was surprising cuz Skelton was so "old." "That guy was born when the dead sea was still sick." About Jim Brulte he said he promised to take him to someplace he's never been before, the gym. About Darrell Steinberg's MY WAY he said Steinberg was "courageous" and he said "who dressed him today? Was it FEMA?" About Dan Walters, Schwarz said he had been working out last week and at 63 years old had lifted 350 lbs. can you imagine that? Then he said: "I lifted Dan Walters out of his chair." He joked about Walter's mood: "Isn't he a positive guy that Dan Walters?" He said (I can't quote this but something like this) if Dan saw Jesus walk on water he'd write the next day, what's wrong with that guy that he can't swim. Then he said, "so positive. I love the guy." Tons of folks mingled at the convention center at the non-vip reception. Some names: Bob White, Bob Naylor; Daniel Zingale who is now with the California Endowment and formerly worked for Schwarz; new Assembly member Roger Dickinson, Asm. Alyson Huber, Doug LaMalfa, Karen Skelton, Donna Lucas, Bonnie Reiss, Beth Miller. Then dinner while comedian and political satirist Will Durst told very funny jokes. He was a hit. So many in the crowd said they too were happy Sacramento was doing such a classy and fun show and that the capitol community ahd come together to support it (buying those expensive tickets). Zingale said it may have been Schwarz celebrity that allowed for such a good kickoff but hopes this can be a start for future events. Lots of reporters there - several said they had to "twist" their editors arms to get them to pay for their tickets. Food was normal convention fare - chicken breast with mashed potatoes. Not even worth mentioning though there was a bottle of red wine and a bottle of white wine on each table. Okay. It's 11:40 pm and I gotta get to sleep.
