Federal prison receiver J. Clark Kelso has ordered California to come up with $2.5 billion to begin building seven new inmate healthcare facilities, funds lawmakers have so far refused to come up with. But with Kelso empowered to take the money with or without Legislative approval, it appears the two sides are headed for an historic legal showdown. On Wednesday August 13 J. Clark Kelso made his first appearance at the Sacramento Press Club to discuss this most critical and contentious issue.

Note: Because we were fortunate enough to have Mr. Kelso become available to join us in August, we are moving our previously planned forum, “The Disappearing Capitol Press Corps,” to a future date. We will post details on that event as soon as they are fully available.

Tapping a Hidden Market: Writing for Business
Conferences
Anyone who has ever attended a business conference knows that such
events produce numerous reports and other related materials. What is less well
known is that many event planners are eager to hire professional freelancers to
produce those documents. Please join the Sacramento Press Club on Tuesday
August 12th as the SPC Freelance Committee welcomes certified meeting
planner Karl Baur of RDL Enterprises, one of California’s most successful event
planning agencies, to talk about this mostly unknown but often very lucrative
market for freelancers. Bauer will also offer great tips on how to leverage
your writing skills to create opportunities in grant writing and strategic planning
for both private and public agencies.
Time is running out to nominate yourself or someone else for the 14thAnnual California Journalism Awards. Cash prizes. The deadline for submitting print, radio and television entries is September 3, 2008. For full details, please click "read more" below.
The new Senate Republican
leader, Dave Cogdill, made his first visit to the Press Club on Tuesday,
July 15 – two weeks after the state’s constitutional budget deadline. Continuing budget shortfalls and a statewide
drought are among the intractable issues facing the Modesto
lawmaker, who has made water issues a major focus of his legislative agenda and
has been described as “the GOP point man on water."
