California’s higher education system is facing historic funding challenges. The recently approved state budget cuts billions of dollars from colleges and universities, including $800 million from its showcase institution, the University of California. UC president Mark Yudof has responded with a controversial plan that includes student enrollment restrictions and across-the-board staff furloughs. In his first visit to the Sacramento Press Club, Yudof discussed this proposal and addressed charges it will irreparably harm a system long considered among the best in the world
