On Tuesday, January 13th the Sacramento Press Club Freelance Committee presented:
The Art of the Interview
Although interviewing key newsmakers has always been one of the keys to good journalism, just landing an interview with the right person doesn't mean much if the reporter fails to ask the right questions at the right time. Knowing what to ask and how to ask it requires diligence, preparation and, most of all, the ability to listen. Award-winning Sacramento Bee reporter Stephen Magagnini shared his insights into conducting great interviews.

Stephen Magagnini has more than three decades of reporting experience behind him, including stints with the St. Petersburg Times, the San Francisco Chronicle and many others. During this time he has covered stories all over the globe, from the first free elections in South Africa to outing corrupt cops in America. He has been with the Sacramento Bee since 1985, where he has covered race and ethnicity for the last 15 years. He has been honored for Distinguished Diversity Writing by the American Society of Newspaper Editors (ASNE) multiple times, and his work appears in the anthologies "Best Newspaper Writing 2001" and "Best Newspaper Writing 2002".
